Youth Department
Vision Statement:
Mission Statement: Programs - Events - Activities: Black College Tour:Gives youth the opportunity to tour historically black colleges throughout the south, during the Easter break each year including fellowship with an out of town church. This is a Christian educational event that helps high school students to begin preparing themselves for their educational future with information and first hand visual awareness. Date: April during Easter break Coordinators: Marcia Rogers Rodger Rogers Diane McGhee Black History Month: The youth department provides the activities that are designed to emphasize the importance of Black people in America, who they are and the contributions they made to the country and the world. We have activities which display the talents of our youth, challenge the knowledge of the youth and adults, and celebrate the heritage of our people. One Sunday out of the month we dress in the attire of our forefathers, either African or plantation dress. On that Sunday there is a soul food dinner that we share. Date: Month of February Coordinators: Diane McGhee Dorothy Lamb Program College Bound Program: Encourages our youth in pursuit of higher education, by demonstrating that the New Hope Family loves them, cares about their trials, supports their effort, and keeps them in our prayers. This is accomplished by providing a care package to college students living away from home, which includes personal care items, cleaning supplies, snacks, a letter from the pastor, an audio-tape of a morning service, and when possible a Sunday school book. The college students who are at home are sent a letter from the Pastor, and a monetary token, to let them know they are continuously in our prayers. Dates: April and October Coordinators: Dorothy Lamb Stephaine Williams Give Me My Flower Day: This is the day the youth department provides flowers to be purchased by any church member or visitor, to give to someone special in their life or someone who has provide spiritual inspiration or assistance. During both services, the Pastor will allow time for the congregation to distribute a flower to each other. The song, “Give Me My Flowers While I can Smell Them” is sung during this special part of the service. Much love is communicated in this simple action. Date: March (7:50 and 10:45 a.m. services) Coordinators: Merry Stewart Linda Sykes, Patricia Moncrease - Food Glenn Miller - Decorations Graduate Honors Ceremony: An opportunity to showcase the graduating youth, and demonstrate our pride in their accomplishment. There will be a dinner and each graduate will receive a token of love. Date: May Coordinators: Merry Stewart Gigi Moore Parents of Grads. Outstanding Scholarship Program: Acknowledges the scholastic achievement of all students who have earned a place on the honor roll or Dean’s list. The students place a copy of their report cards in the youth box, and at the end of each semester, a celebration pizza party with the pastor is held. This reinforces the importance of education and assures that our youth recognize that New Hope supports and encourages their effort. Dates: January and August Coordinators: Beverly Hicks Tracey Pruitt Round table with the Pastor: A number of sessions with the youth and the Pastor, where discussions and questions that are of concern to the youth are addressed by the Pastor. Sometimes the sessions are for the young men and young ladies separately and sometimes the groups are combined. This forum provides an opportunity for the youth to learn practical application of their Christian learnings for everyday use.
